Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma announce the fourth album in their Beethoven for Three series, featuring Symphony No. 1 (Op. 21) and the “Gassenhauer” (Op. 11) and “Ghost” (Op. 70, No. 1) piano trios, three works that span more than a decade of the composer’s output. From Beethoven’s cheerful “Gassenhauer” trio and the symphony that gave the world its first glimpse of his revolutionary voice, carefully reinterpreted for piano, violin, and cello by Shai Wosner, to the singular “Ghost” trio, this recording marks another milestone in three friends’ journey through the marvels of one extraordinary composer. Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 1 and Piano Trios Nos. 4 & 5 is slated for release August 22, 2025, on Sony Classical.

Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 4 and Op. 97 “Archduke,” will be released March 15, 2024 on Sony Classical. Like the artists’ two previous Beethoven for Three releases, this new recording challenges the traditional distinction between chamber and orchestral repertoire, pairing the unforgettable Archduke trio with one of the composer’s most internally varied symphonies, thoughtfully re-arranged for piano, violin, and cello by Shai Wosner. Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 4 and Op. 97 “Archduke” is the latest chapter in three friends’ ongoing exploration of what Beethoven’s invention means for musicians and audiences today.

Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma’s new Beethoven for Three recording, Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” and Op. 1, No. 3, will be released November 11, 2022 on Sony Classical. Like their first Beethoven for Three release — Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5 — this recording challenges the traditional boundary between chamber and orchestral repertoire to offer the listener two very different sides of the composer using the same three voices. In the C Minor piano trio, we hear Beethoven’s brilliant exploration of three instruments’ essential expressive capabilities; in the “Pastorale,” lovingly reimagined for trio by Shai Wosner, the piano, violin, and cello transcend their own identities to represent the endless creativity of the natural world, becoming, in turn, bird, brook, and storm. Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” and Op. 1, No. 3 continues a musical conversation between three friends that always brings audiences new depths and delights.

Hope Amid Tears – Beethoven: Cello Sonatas

Yo-Yo Ma and long-time friend and musical partner Emanuel Ax reunite for Hope Amid Tears, a new recording of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, on Sony Classical. Hope Amid Tears presents Beethoven’s five sonatas for cello and piano in the order in which they were composed, tracing an important arc in Beethoven’s development and approach as a composer. Joining them are Beethoven’s three sets of variations for cello and piano. “When we look to music to give us hope for the future, to believe that we can survive and to do good, it is invariably to Beethoven’s,” says Ax. “His mastery of musical craft was second to none, of course, but it is his indomitable spirit in the face of personal tragedy that makes him unique. In this period of world-wide unease, grief, and suffering, it is perhaps fitting that we are also celebrating the 250th birthday of the composer who represents what is best in our humanity.” Ma and Ax have made music together for more than 40 years, recording dozens of albums, earning five Grammy Awards, and performing on stages all over the world. Their friendship is not only rooted in a deep love of music, but also a shared sense of humor and keen perspectives on life’s joys and challenges. Hope Amid Tears is their second recording of the complete Beethoven cello sonatas, after a 1987 effort that earned the duo their second Grammy.
